We change, whether we like it or not. How we cope wit that change depends on a number of things including whether we chose to make a change or whether it was imposed on us. Change usually raises areas of conflict within us – it often challenges our values, beliefs and attitudes.
A common representation of change is that of a valley between where you are now and where you want to be. Fisher says that the depth of this valley depends on things such as the level of support you have, how strongly you own the change and your understanding of what the new peak represents.
The time to cross the valley is unspecified and you may pass quickly through some stages and linger unduly in others. Fisher states that much of the actual transition through the stages is done subconsciously and may only be apparent on refelction. He also claims that it is the lack of change or lack of progree through the stages that gives us problems associated with achieving change.
